Hell! Unzipping the Abyss
"Unzipping the Abyss" – Bosch-Inspired Watercolor by Michele di Erre
This small yet striking artwork is a dream-infused reinterpretation of the demonic figures from Hieronymus Bosch’s iconic Garden of Earthly Delights, created as part of Antonio García Villarán’s mentorship challenge.
In this surreal postcard-sized study, Michele di Erre blends ink and watercolor to present a bust-length figure whose torso is unzipped to reveal a surreal inner landscape: a tranquil sea in place of internal organs. Floating at its center is an enormous sleeping head—almost as wide as the bust’s shoulders, exuding a sense of stillness and surrender. From the mouth of this dreaming visage spills a vibrant stream of color, like an inner world made manifest, a regurgitation of pure sensation. But then you realize the "explosion" come from behing the figure!
The zip motif is a powerful metaphor: a passage between outer form and inner chaos, between surface control and emotional flood. The fusion of precise ink outlines and the flowing unpredictability of watercolor intensifies this duality.
Part of a series of studies exploring Boschian themes through contemporary eyes, this work is perfect for collectors of visionary, symbolic, and surrealist art. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Bosch’s imagery and the raw, transformative force of personal interpretation.
